Softalk News
Welcome to the November 2005 Newsletter. In this month's newsletter we outline the features of the new WorkgroupMail 8.WorkgroupMail 8
Version 8 of WorkgroupMail has now been released. The previous release attracted many thousands of satisfied users, some of whom gave us really great feedback, which we have used in developing version 8. It’s faster, simpler to buy and more features are now included as standard! Many of the features and plug-ins from version 7 Enterprise are now included in the one standard release at a much more attractive price!
WorkgroupMail is now database driven and performance is faster as a result. Message throughput has increased and IMAP performance has been greatly enhanced. You can use Jet or SQL server with more database technologies planned for the future, including MySQL. This brings obvious advantages in terms of scalability too. You can now cluster several WorkgroupMail servers all based on the same messaging database.
One of the major enhancements is in the Message Archive. Still a free component, it enables you to stay within the law! Legal compliance requirements, such as Sarbanes-Oxley, requires certain organizations to archive their email for a number of years. WorkgroupMail's message archiver can capture every incoming, sent and internal message, storing it to a database, with full indexing for efficient searching of the archive.
The message archiver lets you choose which users mail should be archived and you can specify whether or not attachments should be archived. Searching the archive is fast and efficient and the archiver makes it easy to extract and deliver archived messages to specific users.
The WebMail feature has been replaced by the mail component of Softalk Organizer, which gives you application-style HTML email. Anti-virus is now more tightly integrated, using BitDefender. The optional annual subscriptions are available to order online. Existing customers that have previously purchased the Virus Protection plug-in with WorkgroupMail v7 may still use this plug-in with version 8, however new customers must use the BitDefender Virus Scanning option.
Content filtering has been improved with new rule functionality, dictionaries, email lists and IP lists. Dictionaries allow content keywords to be organised more easily into specific categories. Email lists and IP lists allow message processing to be more address and location specific so that, for example, messages from a certain sender, group of senders or mail server can be redirected to the appropriate recipient.
The LDAP shared address book and mailing list functionality remains the same.
Did you know: Free/busy information
Did you know that you can use WorkgroupShare to organize meetings in Microsoft Outlook? Our WorkgroupShare product lets users of Microsoft Outlook share their calendars, contacts, tasks and email folders with other Outlook users without needing Exchange Server, but it also contains a free/busy server. This means that you can use it to find out whether or not those people that you want to invite to a meeting already have something scheduled in their calendar at the time of the planned meeting.

Outlook's meeting scheduler lets you enter the email address of those people that you want to invite to the meeting. It then passes this information to the WorkgroupShare free/busy server. WorkgroupShare looks up this information and returns it to Outlook, causing Outlook to block out the time that is already marked as busy.

Did you know: Message archiving
From time to time we will be posting "Did You Know" blogs, that are intended to keep you aware of the features in the Softalk range of products. This is the first of these postings and focusses on message archiving in WorkgroupMail 8.
Did you know that WorkgroupMail version 8 can keep an archive copy of all incoming and outgoing mail messages? This is an extremely useful function as well as a legal requirement for many companies in the US.

The messages can be archived to the WorkgroupMail database or to a separate database. You can archive messages to and from all users or just a subset of users. You can also specify whether or not to archive attachments.
Because WorkgroupMail indexes the contents of the message archive, searching the archive is extremely fast. You can search for words in the subject or body of a message and you can further filter on messages that were sent during a particular date range, sent by a specific person or received by a specific person.
